SuperEnvironment Tutorial

Java EE (Java Enterprise Edition) is the new name for the Java platform. But J2EE (Java 2 Enterprise Edition) is still widely used. In this document J2EE and Java EE are interchangeable.

Welcome to SuperEnvironment!

In this tutorial, we will show you how to monitor and manage global environment variables. See Overview about SuperEnvironment and GlobalEnvironment for more information.

By the way, you can press the F1 key to access context sensitive help system from any window throughout the whole program.

SuperEnvironment is a GUI tool for managing GlobalEnvironment, which is a richer environment for J2EE applications. When your applications use values from these environment, instead of using static values in deployment descriptors, you can use GUI tools to manage the environment visually at run time.

1. Let's add some environment variables, so we can monitor them.

Go to the main menu. Click on Module > SuperEnvironment > GlobalDouble.

2. The GlobalDouble List Panel appears. This panel derived from Table Panel. If you want to customize it, see Set preferred layout for details.

Let's click on the Add Button.

3. The GlobalDouble Panel appears. Type example.ibm into the Name field and 100 into the Value field. Click the Ok button. Note: example.ibm must be spelled exactly. A simulation program will access it later.

4. We come back to GlobalDouble List Panel. Now an environment variable example.ibm has been added on the list.

5. Do the same to add another variable example.sun on the list. The two items are enough for our tutorial, click on the Close button to close this panel.

6. Go back to the main menu. Click on Module > SuperEnvironment > New to add a monitoring panel.

7. The Name Radar Panel appears. Type MyPortfolio as our radar name. Click the Ok button.

8. The MyPortfolio Panel pops up. It  is a Radar Kaleidoscope Panel. This panel automatically refreshes itself promptly. The Refresh button is useful when the monitor process is stopped.

Let's add an item by clicking on Add button.

9. The Add Radar Panel appears. Highlight the GlobalDouble item and click on the Browse button.

10. The GlobalDouble Select Panel pops up, which lists all available environment key-value pairs. Highlight example.ibm and click on the Select button.

11. Now, we come back to the Add Radar Panel, with example.ibm on the Key field. Click on the Ok button.

12. We come back to the Radar Kaleidoscope Panel. We can see example.ibm is on the list. Repeat step 6 - 8 to add example.sun.

13. Now we are going to run a simulation program, as an example, to change the values of example.ibm and example.sun, then we will see a live monitor for those two global environment variables.

Let's click on the main menu Module > SuperEnvironment > Run Example.

Then the Attention Panel will appears, make sure the prerequisite is met.

14. The Portfolio Example Panel appears. It simulates changes of stock prices. So the environment variables example.ibm and example.sun change constantly.

15. Let's move the Portfolio Example Panel to the background by clicking on the title bar of the MyPortfolio Panel. Let's look at this panel closely. There are three tabs on the panel. The Table tab gives us a text representation, the Time Series gives a time series representation. The Pie tab gives a pie representation. By clicking on each of them you can see different representations.

16. Let's save the work, so we can use it later, or give to your co-workers.

Click on Table tab, so  we come back to Table view. Click on the Save button. A  file MyPortfolio.radar will be saved quietly. We are done! You can use the Restore button to retrieve the saved data, or go to the main menu and click on Module > SuperEnvironment > Open to open previously saved monitoring panel.

This is our short tutorial. You have seen how easy it is to monitor environment variables on your system and how easy it is to manage your Global Environment. You can get more information from SuperEnvironment document.
